Hong Kong Travel Resource

If this is your first time visiting Hong Kong, Hong Kong is split into 3 sections:
  • Hong Kong Island (where the skyscrapers and big office buildings are)
  • Kowloon (the bustling area that hugs Victoria Harbour)
  • The New Territories (all the other land and islands that make up Hong Kong, including the border with Mainland China)
If looking for a place to stay, most tourists will tend to stay in either Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Neighborhoods with many hotels that cater to tourists are found in areas such as the Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, and Mongkok neighborhoods of Kowloon - and the Central, Admiralty, and Causeway Bay neighborhoods of Hong Kong Island. Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are separated by Victoria Harbour, but this is easily and quickly crossable by ferry and subway (MTR).

Hotels

Note that most hotel rooms in Hong Kong are subject to a 10% service charge and 3% government tax (total 13% in extra charges). (Note, that as of July 1, 2008, the Hong Kong government has decided to end the 3% government tax for hotel rooms) So, whatever price you find for a hotel, be sure to check if the price includes these extra charges or not. Some hotel websites will tell you that their prices are inclusive of these charges, but some will not show you these additional charges until you are just about to book the room or (unfortunately) after you have already booked the room.

Note that the price ranges listed below mean that these hotels offer at least one type of room in this price range (and of course they will have many other types of rooms that are more expensive).  These price ranges do not represent the average price for all rooms at these hotels.

Here are my current hotel recommendations for the first time traveller (click on the hotel name to go to the hotel's website):
